My Top 3 Skin Care Myths

A lot of people think a certain way when it comes to skin care and health. The reality is, only the experts, like myself, truly know how to take care of the precious and fragile human skin properly. With so-called ‘experts’ and viral trends on every social media outlet and all over the internet encouraging viewers to follow this tip and that tip, there are a ton of myths that need to be debunked immediately! Today, I wanted to touch on the top 3 skin care myths you have most likely hard before!

Myth #1: You get acne because you don’t wash your face.

We all have heard this time and time again.  “Wash your face or you’ll get acne!” While this holds true to a certain extent, it is, indeed, a myth. You won’t get acne just because you don’t wash your face correctly or frequently enough. In order for acne to develop, you need to have a combination of four factors: clogged pores from shedding keratin/skin cells, sebum, bacteria and inflammation. So, while not washing your face certainly won’t help the problem, it’s not the sole cause of acne. There are many reasons you can get acne, but essentially if you don’t follow a carefully curated treatment programme you are at higher risk of acne.

Myth #2: Any product that is marked “natural” or “chemical free” must be better for you than other types of skin care products!

This again is true… to an extent. But still a myth that needs to be busted. It depends on the person and your skin type, which is why it is so crucial to have an expert like myself sit down for a consultation to give your treatment plan a clear path! Things like ‘chemical’ peels can still be from natural ingredients and great for all skin types as well.  It’s all about preference and skin type when deciding what ingredients to put on your skin. There is no concrete evidence that certain chemicals and preservatives in skin care are harmful to your skin or body. In fact, without preservatives, skin care and cosmetics are more susceptible to the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast (which yep, is very bad!). In addition to this, selecting a natural or clean product that is not medical grade and created, tested, and approved by medical professionals can do more damage than good. If you do opt to choose only natural products try to opt for medical grade skincare natural products if possible and always make sure to check the labels for expiration dates!

Myth #3: You’ll age faster if you wear makeup regularly.

This one just isn’t true, as long as you remove your makeup daily and keep up with a consistent cleansing regime. Just like anything you put on your face for too long, keeping it there prolonged can harm your skin and accelerate ageing. So all you have to do is make sure to remove the makeup, cleanse, and dry!  Have any questions or want to create a treatment programme to improve your skin condition?
