Last week I posted a blog that got a TON of awesome feedback! I went over the top 3 myths I hear and see all the time over the internet that makes my blood boil!
I still had a bunch of people asking me various questions, questioning certain myths they hear, and obviously keep seeing fake experts online giving false information. So today, I wanted to do a follow-up blog debunking my final 3 huge myths about skin care that could be throwing off your routine and skin’s health right now!
Myth #4: Washing your face with hot water will open up the pores for a better clean.
Washing your face with hot water is actually BAD for your skin! Sure, steam may open your pores a little more, but too much heat can also damage the outer layers of your skin and shock it, causing damage to the cells. It can damage the protective layers and qualities of your skin causing you to break out and soak up dirt/debris easier.
Instead, use a steamed or hot towel to lightly open your pores. If you feel any burning, it is too hot! Keep things at a lukewarm temperature, not burning hot. If your skin burns or is red, turn the dial down!
Myth #5: The harder you scrub/exfoliate, the better.
Anyone who gives you this advice, run! Exfoliators don’t have to hurt to work. Always be on the gentle side of things to your precious skin. Scrubbing too hard or often can damage the outer protective layers of your skin. It can also remove the essential oils on the outside of your skin and strip it of nutrients that are keeping your skin healthy.
Make sure to be kind and gentle to your skin when it comes to scrubbing and exfoliating. You shouldn’t be exfoliating more than 2-3 times per week! Let things naturally occur!
Myth #6: Beauty is Pain. If it burns or stings, it means it’s working!
If anyone tells you this, run faster than the person claiming the harder you scrub and exfoliate the better the results will be for your skin! If something burns, remove it immediately with a cool and damp cloth. A burning sensation is the body’s response to foreign objects we are allergic to and trying to reject. This is one of the most dangerous myths out there because it almost sounds believable… Playing with the phrase “No pain, no gain” or “Beauty is pain.” With taking care if you’re precious skin, a slight tingle is ok, but not a fierce burning sensation. This type of burning reaction indicates you have sensitive skin to that product and need to get rid of it before it damages your skin layers. If a new product or method feels off to you, remove it right away and toss it in the trash! Always consult with a medical professional when using products strong enough to tingle, and ensure they are medical grade products for best results.
