Botox! One of the world’s most well-known and sought after treatments. Since we are actually giving away a FREE Botox makeover ($700 Value) on Instagram this month, we wanted to have a little follow-up blog for you all with some more common questions and myth busters about this legendary treatment.
At a glance, Botox seems like an incredible and immediate solution to fine lines and wrinkles, and with over six million Botox injections administered each year, it’s also one of the most popular cosmetic treatments out there.
Despite being FDA approved and being used for over 20 years there are a ton of myths and misinformation about Botox, including the procedure and the risks. Today, I am here to put the rumors to rest and answer all your burning questions about Botox. Let’s dive right in!
- Again, What is Botox?
We had a whole other blog that really took a deep dive into Botox, but for those of you who are new to reading this, let’s recap…
Botox comes from a neurotoxin produced by clostridium botulinum. A product of this natural forming bacterium is the botulinum toxin, which is used in small doses to make things like forehead wrinkles disappear.
- How Do Botox Injections Work?
For you to understand this, you have to know a thing or two about muscles. For a muscle to move, a nerve has to release a signal called a neurotransmitter that signals the muscle to move. Botox depletes that neurotransmitter thereby inhibiting the muscle from moving. By blocking local nerve impulses to specific muscles within your face, albeit temporarily, Botox prevents you from having full control of your facial expressions, and therefore the wrinkles that come with it.
- Where Can You Get Botox Injections?
Botox is most commonly used to treat, prevent and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by relaxing the muscles. Key areas for injection as specified by the FDA are your forehead, around your eyes, and between your eyebrows. You can also use it to soften neck lines, chin lines, around the jaw, and around the mouth.
- Why Does Botox Appear to ‘Fill In’ Lines When it’s Not Actually a Filler?
The muscles around your eyes, forehead and between the eyebrows form a wrinkle when they move. If the muscle is no longer able to move the same way, the wrinkle softens. This provides a smooth appearance to the skin.
- How Much Botox Should You Actually Have?
It varies from person to person, but the common industry average would be around 25-35 units for forehead wrinkles, and between 3-10 units for other areas like your eyebrows and around the eyes. The strength of the muscle you are ‘treating’ determines how much you really need, as well as other factors.
- How Long Does Botox Take to Work?
Botox takes around 24 to 48 hours to kick in and results begin to appear within three to seven days. However, the full effects of Botox often won’t show until 10 to 14 days later. In the cosmetic world, this is considered a really quick fix!
- How Long Does Botox Typically Last?
If it is done by a professional like Dr. Sasi, and the proper dosage is used, 3-4 months. It also depends on where the treatment and injection was located. Everyone’s body processes Botox differently as well!
- Can You Fix Bad Botox?
In all of my treatments, I have never had the slightest negative experience, but for those of you who are curious, not really. Unlike hyaluronic fillers that can be dissolved with an injection of hyaluronidase, if Botox goes wrong there’s no fix, you need to wait it out. And yes, you can have too much Botox. That is why it is so important you find someone like myself who can help you in the right way and distribute Botox correctly and with care.
- Are There Any Side Effects to Botox?
You may experience minor inflammation and redness of the treatment area or slight bruising, but this shouldn’t last long. Nothing major!
- Does Botox Hurt?
No! It is basically just a pinch. A little pin-prick. Some people have even come to get Botox on their lunch break. Very simple, smooth, and easy procedure.
